STIs and STDs

These two terms refer to sexually transmitted infections(STIs) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Anyone who has sex can get one - you don't have to have had a lot of different partners.

If you think you have an infection, you can go to your healthcare professional, any NHS genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic or to a special clinic such as a family planning clinic or sexual health clinic. The tests that you will be given are free throughout the UK and services are confidential. Some clinics have special services for people who have been sexually assaulted.

Levonelle® One Step should not replace regular, long-term contraception. Emergency contraception and advice on contraception is available free from your GP, Family Planning Clinic or NHS Walk-in Centre. Always read the label. Contains levonorgestrel. Not 100% effective. Levonelle® One Step can be used for up to 72 hours after unprotected sex, but it's more effective the sooner you take it.
